At Bikini Tiki bar, we manufacture our own palm thatch. Our product is made of woven Date Palm leaves which is the best choice for your palapa, tiki bar or any outdoor structure that needs shade. (***Be careful of inferior products – READ BELOW***)
The palm thatch branches are harvested; dried, striped then woven by hand in tightly woven knots about 1.5" apart. The knotting is what gives this product its integrity. Our palm thatch is strong and durable. The life of our palm thatch is around 5 years and over time it will turn a silver gray, like cedar siding. You may get a longer life span depending on where you live. Since we manufacture and import our palm thatch direct, you can bet we have the best prices and quality in the industry. In fact we wholesale our thatch to many other companies.
Fire retardant is available for purchase but not necessary unless you are barbequing directly underneath the thatch.
Thatch comes in the following dimensions:
3x4' panels - $26.00
7' umbrella tops - $148.00
9' umbrella tops - $168.00
12' umbrella tops - $204.00
2'x57 thatch roll - $396.00

***Be careful of sites selling African Reed or Elephant Grass***
African Reed is basically little tiny sticks of bamboo. The Reed is stacked on top of each other and the heart of the bundles will trap moisture and rot. This product is very expensive and requires a substantial sub-structure to support the weight of the product. Bamboo is hollow and does well with rainforest type humidity, but not so good in dryer climates that we are accustom to having in the United States. In a few months of being exposed to sun and heat is that it turns black, looking like it has been burned. A few Las Vegas hotels have had this happen and it all had to be taken out a few months later – A big mess and cost that no one should have to deal with.

Above are photos of elephant grass and African reed. These products do not have
the strength or durability as our tightly woven date palm thatch has (pictures below)
The Elephant Grass is exactly that----GRASS---. It has a lazy droopy look and is not bound or woven as well to give the bundles integrity in strength. It’s similar to breaking open a bale of straw and laying it on your roof. For the more refined consumer with good taste the Date Palm Thatch is the better choice. It is tightly woven and knotted so the strength is there to give you a very good product with durability.
Here are some photos of our quality product

The front side of our 3'x4' Palm thatch panels.
Notice how shapely and well proportioned each blade of thatch
is placed. This is due to tightly woven spacing of each knot on the
back side.

Another shot of the front side laying on the ground.

The back side of our 3'x4' palm thatch panels.
Notice how symmetrical the knotting is. This is what gives
the panel its strength and durability. You will not find this
kind of quality elsewhere for the price.

Our palm thatch is bundled and protected in heavy plastic
before placed into heavy duty cardboard for shipping.
